ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Throughout this decade, numerous cricket teams, including Team India, have undergone significant transitions. With the exception of Australia and England, many teams experienced substantial changes in their core squads and overall strengths following the conclusion of the 2019 World Cup.
Team India, in particular, witnessed significant alterations in their pace bowling attack and batting lineup. It appears highly unlikely that Shikhar Dhawan is part of the selectors’ future plans, suggesting that he may have already played his last international match for Team India. Additionally, India’s prominent wicket-keeper, MS Dhoni, announced his retirement in August 2020.
Indian players who played last edition won’t be playing 2023 World Cup
1. MS Dhoni
The World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand marked the end of MS Dhoni’s international career for India. His run-out, caused by Martin Guptill’s famous throw, remains a painful memory for cricket fans. Following that, MS Dhoni removed himself from consideration for selection, and approximately a year later, in August 2020, he officially announced his retirement from international cricket.
2. Shikhar Dhawan
During the 2019 edition of the World Cup, Shikhar Dhawan delivered an impressive century against Australia but unfortunately sustained a finger injury. Consequently, he was forced to withdraw from the tournament and return to India. His exclusion from the recent West Indies and Ireland tours by the selectors sends a clear message, suggesting that India is likely to seek a new opening batsman for the 2023 World Cup.
3. Kedar Jadhav
India’s batting lineup has identified several promising young talents, favouring them over players in the above-35 age group. With options such as Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Ishan Kishan available for middle-order and finisher roles, it appears highly improbable that Kedar Jadhav will make a comeback to the squad.
4. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Similar to Shikhar Dhawan, India’s new-ball bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has struggled to earn a spot in contention for a place in the World Cup team. His last ODI appearance was during India’s tour of South Africa in January 2022, and with a multitude of options available in the pace bowling department, it appears that Bhuvneshwar Kumar may once again find himself sidelined from the squad for the 2023 World Cup.
5. Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant encountered a significant accident in December of the previous year, which has kept him out of action ever since. Pant, who played four matches in the 2019 World Cup and scored 116 runs, was considered a vital asset for India in the upcoming 2023 World Cup. Regrettably, he will be unable to participate in another major event this year. There is hope for his comeback in February 2024 against England.
6. Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik, who served as India’s stand-in wicket-keeper during the 2019 World Cup, has been unable to secure a place in the ODI playing XI since then. Similar to MS Dhoni, Karthik also played his last one-day international game during the World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand. Although he did make a return to the T20I side, he hasn’t been able to regain his place in the 50-over format. As a result, Dinesh Karthik is not in the running for a spot in the 2023 World Cup squad.
7. Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal’s absence from the World Cup squad has come as a surprise to numerous cricket enthusiasts and experts. Despite his recent strong performances with the ball, he lost his spot to the in-form Kuldeep Yadav. Chahal had an impactful World Cup 2019, playing in eight matches and taking 12 wickets.
