Shoaib Jatt: After the first Test between Pakistan and New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi, Pakistani journalist Shoaib Jatt and captain Babar Azam got into a heated argument, which he later clarified.
What happened during the press conference?
During the press conference that followed the drawn Test, Jatt was overheard saying, “Ye koi tareeka nahi hain, yaha sawaal ke lie aapko ishaare kar rahe hain. (People are attempting to ask questions to you, this is not appropriate).” Babar then took a moment to reflect before turning to face the reporter. While this was going on, the Pakistani media manager silenced the reporter and turned off the microphone.
Jatt said in the same regard that he didn’t misbehave with Babar but was instead annoyed by the Pakistan media manager. The journalist said that at the press conference, he was denied the opportunity to ask questions.
After his statements went viral, Jatt also disclosed that he had gotten a lot of criticism and threats on his social media accounts. In addition, he pledged to keep speaking the truth without becoming bogged down.
What did Shoaib Jatt say?
In a statement, Jatt said “Something happened after the press conference finished and it’s being portrayed in such a way that maybe I misbehaved with Babar Azam. The thing is, there was no interaction between me and Babar. Therefore, I am being abused and people are sending me messages on social media. People are tagging me on posts and abusing me. I am being threatened to be lifted from home and being beaten up. I am not going to worry about it.”
Continuing further, he said “I will stand with the truth and maybe I made a mistake by telling the truth that in 2022, Pakistan didn’t win a single Test at home under Babar Azam. When you don’t win, I will only say, you didn’t win. But the statement is being manipulated. It’s my right to ask questions in the press conference and I am given the chance. But deliberately, the Pakistani media manager didn’t take my question and rather, ignored me. Hence, I protested by taking the name of the manager.”
“People related it with Babar. I know what journalistic norms and decorum are. It’s not my first press conference and I have covered plenty others, including the World Cup and the Champions Trophy. It’s a well-planned plan against me and I am being targeted and the situation has worsened to the extent that I am being threatened. I am not going to fear and keep speaking for the truth,” Babar added.
Pakistan only defeated Sri Lanka in one of the nine tests they played in 2022. At home, Pakistan fell to Ben Stokes’ England 0-3 and failed to win a single match in the strictest sense of the word. On Monday, January 2, at the National Stadium, the second Test between Pakistan and New Zealand is scheduled to begin.
