Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in the world currently. He has cemented himself with the greats and with the way he is playing, he might retire as one of the best to grace this sport.
He is also one of the few pacers who have captained their national side. If you look at the history there are very few who were appointed as the captain of their side. Bumrah is also ready to take up the role once again.
A few days ago, he talked about the lack of opportunities for pace bowlers in leadership roles. He gave examples of Imran Khan, Kapil Dev, Pat Cummins, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis who have been successful captains while being pacers.
‘Should Not Be A Captain’
However, former Pakistani batsman Basit Ali thinks otherwise. He stated that all the players mentioned by Bumrah were sort of all-rounders. And at this point, the Indian speedster should think about bowling.
He stated, “Bumrah shouldn’t chase captaincy, it’s just like how Babar Azam likes captaincy. He is a top-class bowler and should focus on his bowling.
He spoke about Kapil Dev and Imran Khan, who were successful captains because of their all-around skills. The two didn’t get captaincy when they got into teams as bowlers. This is a difference between a bowler and an all-rounder.”
Basit also acknowledged Cummins and stated that there are only a few pacers who can succeed as captains. He further stated that
Jasprit Bumrah Rested
It looks like BCCI is serious about maintaining Bumrah’s workload and does not want any injury. He was rested for the ODI series against Sri Lanka and might be rested against Bangladesh as well.
Several reports have suggested that Gautam Gambhir wants to find a left-arm pacer in tests. With the return of Mohammad Shami and Siraj, we might see Bumrah directly against New Zealand.
