Shubman Gill: In response to the question of “who’s next” after Sunil Gavaskar retired, Sachin Tendulkar ruled the game. The question resurfaced in the latter stages of his career, and Virat Kohli entered. And even though the Run Machine has a long way to go before leaving the sport, his heir apparent has already arrived. Shubman Gill passed Virat Kohli’s century earlier this week with his match-winning hundred, then on Friday, in front of the late Sachin, Gill displayed his third century of the 2023 IPL. Even though the two older stars in both instances experienced grief, there was undoubtedly a smile and some respect as they saw a kid emerge and become set to rule the world of cricket.
Gill’s Meteoric Rise Across Formats
The year has been Gill’s. He had a debut T20I century in January, a Test hundred in the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia in February, and an ODI record double tonne in between when he entered the IPL this year. The 23-year-old then continued his sensational play in IPL 2023, scoring his first century at his beloved Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by two more against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, and his third in just four innings against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, which saw him reach a number of milestones.
Gill’s Unforgettable Knock Rewrites IPL Playoff History
The batter’s score of 129 off just 60 balls currently holds the record for the highest ever achieved in the IPL playoffs. The win increased his season total to 851 runs, moving him into third place overall and becoming him the second Indian batsman (after Kohli) to score 800 or more runs in a season. After the game against MI, in which Gill was honoured as Player of the Match for his record knock that helped GT easily advance to a second straight final with a 62-run victory in Ahmedabad, the opener was spotted having an animated conversation with MI team coach Sachin. The image spread like wildfire on social media.
