Smriti Mandhana: In a historic moment during the fifth match of the Women’s Hundred tournament on August 4th, Friday, Star Indian women’s batter Smriti Mandhana etched her name in the record books as the first player to reach 500 runs. The 27-year-old achiever, representing Southern Brave, her sole franchise in the competition for the past three years, accomplished this feat while facing Welsh Fire at Rose Bowl in Southampton.
Smriti Mandhana tops the chart
Throughout her Women’s Hundred career, Smriti Mandhana has impressively accumulated 503 runs across 17 innings while representing Southern Brave. In the 2021 season, she showcased her prowess with a decent tally of 167 runs in 7 innings, and her performance further soared in the subsequent year, amassing 211 runs in 8 innings. Having achieved two consecutive fifties in the 2023 season, she soared to the top of the chart, amassing an impressive 125 runs from 78 balls.
In addition to being the first player to achieve the milestone of scoring 500 runs in The Hundred, Mandhana created another record by becoming the first player in the competition’s history to secure five half-centuries. Her fifty against Fire not only contributed to her achievement but also helped her surpass her India teammate Jemimah Rodrigues’ previous record of four fifties. Jemimah, now in second place, shares the spot with Mandhana’s Brave teammate Danni Wyatt, who also boasts four 50-plus scores.
Tough loss for Smriti Mandhana’s team
Despite the commendable half-centuries from both opening batters on Friday, the Southern Brave fell short in their chase of the target of 166 runs against the Fire, losing by a narrow margin of three runs. The Fire’s success was propelled by the exceptional performance of West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews, who scored a brilliant 65 runs off 38 balls, helping her team post a competitive total of 165 runs for the loss of three wickets in 100 balls. Despite Mandhana’s unbeaten knock of 70 runs, the Southern Brave could not manage to secure the victory.
