Smriti Mandhana is one of the best players in the world. When she is on the top of her game, very few batters come close to her. Mandhana can change the tide of any match on her own.
She proved that once again when she played a warrior’s knock against South Africa to save a collapse on the Indian team. She was fighting the might of Proteas all alone and the Chinnaswamy crowd came on their feet for their queen.
This was Mandhana’s second century against South Africa and her first century in almost two years. Her last century came against West Indies during the ICC ODI World Cup 2022.
Smriti Mandhana: The Warrior
The first match between South Africa and India of the match series kicked off on Sunday. It was the worst possible start for ICT. The wickets kept falling and they were 99/5 at one point in time.
That is when Mandhana forged two important partnerships. First with Deepti Sharma and then with Pooja Vastrakar to set a challenging total for the Proteas. From being 99/5 to 265/8 in 50 overs, Mandhana changed the scoreline on her back.
She had already done her work when she was dismissed in the 47th over after scoring 117 runs in 127 deliveries. She was dejected as she wanted to finish the innings, but the crowd at Chinnaswamy knew what a sensational knock it was. They made sure to appreciate the former Indian skipper and were on their feet clapping for the valiant effort they saw on the pitch.
Joined The Elites
With this inning, Mandhana also joined the elite list and surpassed 7000 international runs across all formats. She is now the second-highest run-scorer for India, only behind the legend Mithali Raj, who has scored 10,868 runs in her career.
