Jasprit Bumrah: Before making his debut in limited-overs cricket in front of his home fans, particularly in the current World Cup against longstanding rivals Pakistan, India’s bowling ace Jasprit Bumrah expressed confidence in his abilities and emphasised his focus on performance over outcomes.
High-octane India Pakistan match on 14th October
The world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, is set to be the grand setting for the two nations to rekindle their cricketing rivalry during the weekend. As the hosts aim to maintain their unbeaten streak in the quadrennial competition and retain their pride of never losing to their arch-rivals in seven World Cup encounters, Pakistan seeks their inaugural tournament victory against their neighbors.
Addressing a pre-match press conference before the highly-anticipated clash with Pakistan, the fast bowler mentioned that in India’s recent match against Afghanistan, the ball appeared to be coming off the bat quite comfortably right from the start. Consequently, the pacers aimed to deliver deliveries with more power and challenging lengths to encourage the batters to attempt “challenging shots.”
What did Jasprit Bumrah say?
Expressing his enthusiasm for the unique opportunity to compete in a World Cup in front of his home crowd, Bumrah mentioned, “I just go with my preparation, I go with the process that I feel is right to read the wickets and try to find the best answers that work on those wickets. As simple as that. I am not thinking about the results, because I have got results (against Afghanistan). I try to back my strengths, read the wickets and try to give my best. See, obviously in this format you have to understand what is working. So some days there would be some swings, so your lengths would change but this wicket (against Afghanistan) was quite a batting deck that we realised early on as well when we started bowling.”
He further added, “There was a little bit of seam but the ball was coming on to the bat really well from the first over, so we realized that. So, we were just trying to hit the hard length, try to make it as difficult as possible and try to make them hit difficult shots. So that was the plan and probably we were trying to do that. I am a little detached person, I do not know what is going around in the world, so I just look at what I have to do on a particular day. Obviously, reading the game and my strengths that is what has worked for me in the past as well, keeping all of those things in mind, will keep going forward.”
Jasprit Bumrah’s starry comeback
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s leading bowler who has made a strong comeback after a prolonged injury break, has already secured six wickets in the current World Cup, boasting an average of 13.71, with his best figures being 5/59. Currently, he ranks as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker. Bumrah clarified that the team didn’t dwell much on the net run rate before their match against Afghanistan. The cricketing rivalry between India and Pakistan, rivalled only by the Ashes, is renowned for drawing massive crowds and global television audiences.
