Suryakumar Yadav: At the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav scored his second century in the T20I against New Zealand. SKY, who has been in red-hot form throughout this year has continued to stun the cricket community with his run-scoring streak against all the teams, irrespective ofthe venue.
Second Indian player to score two T20I centuries in a year
With consecutive fours off Lockie Ferguson in the 19th over, Suryakumar scored 22 runs to reach the three-figure mark. Suryakumar follows Rohit Sharma, from 2018, as the second Indian player to record two T20I centuries in a single year. With 11 fours and seven sixes, he scored 111 off 51 balls to finish unbeaten.
Suryakumar Yadav now holds the record for third and fourth highest scores by an Indian in T20I. Against Afghanistan this year, Virat Kohli smashed 122* which eventually turned out to be the highest. Rohit Sharma holds the record for second highest with 118 runs he scored against Sri Lanka in 2017. Yadav fell short by one run as he scored 117 runs against England this year. With today’s knock he holds the fourth spot as well.
In the third Twenty20 international at Trent Bridge in July of this year, Suryakumar smacked a remarkable 48-ball century in a losing effort for India against England.
Second batsman to score 1000+ T20I runs in a calendar year
With 239 runs in six innings and an exceptional strike rate of well under 190, Suryakumar finished third in the recently finished T20 World Cup in Australia. In Melbourne’s final T20 World Cup group match against Zimbabwe in 2022, he also scored his 1000th run, an undefeated 61, passing the mark.
Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who totaled 1326 runs in T20I in 2021, is the only other player to have achieved 1000+ runs in a calendar year. After today’s match Surya is 175 runs behind Rizwan from that record.
