T20 Blast: Finally, one of the biggest T20 franchise events has ended. On July 15, 2023, Edgbaston hosted a very close final game of the T20 Blast. The final ended with Somerset stealing a close win and clinching the title after 18 long years.
This is Somerset’s maiden T20 Blast title since its inception. It has been 18 long years since the beginning of the tournament and Somerset finally clinched one. The final was as beautiful as you would have expected.
Going into the final day, Warwickshire and Somerset were on the same amount of points. A loss by a decent margin could have seen Somerset losing the title to their North rivals. But they were in no mood to let it happen.
Sean Dickson Heroics
Somerset were forced to bat first after losing the toss. And Essex were dominant with their bowling. They were able to get wickets in quick and regular intervals to keep Somerset score under the danger level.
Sean Dickson scored his first half-century of the season to get Somerset to a respectable and fighting total of 145. Shane Snated took three wickets early on to completely choke Somerset’s batting.
Matt Henry Ran Riot
Somerset needed a hero in this situation and Matt Henry decided to be one. He got the first three batsmen of Essex cheaply to start a fire under his team. And before anyone realized the score was 55/5.
A scare came when Paul Walter was dropped on 1 and he started hitting some boundaries. But Ish Sodhi sends him to the pavilion soon after that. Daniel Sams tried to save the match with a well-scored 45 in just 25 deliveries, but a phenomenon catch to finish the season got his wicket.
Ish Sodhi took 3 wickets later in the inning to all out Essex at 131 runs in 18.3 overs. This meant that Somerset won the match by 14 runs and ended their 18-year-long drought.
