T20 World Cup 2022: One of the Netherlands’ most promising cricketing potential is 19-year-old Vikramjit Singh. On Thursday, he played against the nation of his ancestors i.e. India. It was the most significant game of Vikramjit’s international career, in his opinion.
Khushi Cheema, Vikramjit’s grandpa, had left Cheema Khurd, a village close to the Jalandhar border, on a chilly December night in 1984 to protect his family as the insurgency in Punjab began to gain strength in the middle of the 1980s. They eventually relocated to the Netherlands.
However, because they didn’t speak the language, and because the society was entirely different, life there was incredibly difficult. Getting settled took them a few years.
They overcame many hardships and experienced prejudice. Because of their skin tone, turban, and beard, they had to deal with a lot back then due to racism. But things started to get better with time. After beginning his career as a cab driver in his new nation, Khushi Cheema transferred ownership of his transportation business to his son Harpreet before returning to India in 2000.
Vikramjit was raised in Cheema Khurd and only migrated to the Netherlands when he was seven years old. He never had to deal with issues like his family did. Then-Dutch captain Peter Borren noticed him at a U-12 competition when he was 11 years old. A sporting equipment manufacturer that produced bats for legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly, Dhoni, and Harbhajan also sponsored him.
Vikramjit joined the Netherlands ‘A’ side at the age of 15. He debuted for the senior team two years later. Being a professional cricket player in a nation like the Netherlands, where the national sport is football, is difficult because the season ends in September and does not resume until March.
The youth spent six months honing his talents at Uniyal’s Gurusagar Cricket Academy in Chandigarh from 2015–16 to 2019–20. In 2021, Vikramjit relocated to Jalandhar and began training with Taruwar Kohli, a former player for the India U-19 team who had formerly played for an Amsterdam-based club.
