T20 World Cup 2022: With some outstanding performances and eye-catching results that produced top-notch entertainment throughout, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 has put forward a strong claim to being the best tournament yet.
However, it was always going to be the Super 12 stage that the competition really blew up, and that is exactly what happened. Here, we examine the Super 12 encounters that will live long in the memory as the finest of the best.
1. India vs Pakistan
The victory of India against Pakistan will go down in history as not just one of the best World Cup matches of this tournament, but also one of the most exciting World Cup matches ever.
It was a textbook example of the genre: early Powerplay wickets to derail the first innings, a middle-order uprising to set a respectable but manageable target, and a chase that came down to the very last ball.
However, Virat Kohli’s stunning and match-winning innings of 82* from 53 balls, which included several smashes that defied cricketing methods in his inning, is what distinguishes this game as the Super 12 stage’s outstanding game.
2. Netherlands vs South Africa
Even after a late surge of runs, it still appeared unlikely that one of the tournament’s most destructive hitting lineups would fail to chase down 158 runs. All six of South Africa’s top scorers hit double figures, yet they still fell short. While the bowling was excellent, the batting was at best shaky. And there were raucous celebrations from both the Dutch and the curious Pakistani and Bangladeshi supporters.
3. New Zealand vs Australia
Despite being one of the most close matches in the Super 12, Australia and New Zealand’s encounter was one of the best because of how much it affected the rest of the competition. By scoring 42 runs in the powerplay on just 16 balls, Finn Allen changed Australia’s group stage strategy with Mitchell Starc.
Devon Conway also did a fantastic job with his not out 92 from 58 deliveries. Australia collapsed in pursuit of 200/3. The tournament’s hosts were defeated by a margin from which it was impossible for them to recover after being bowled out for just 111. In the end, it was this defeat that caused their title defence to come to an end, as England beat them on net run rate.
4. Ireland vs England
Ireland’s victory in this game is a huge moment for the cricket, regardless of the circumstances. England will regret the rain and their inability to advance past the required rate when they had the chance.
The Irish previously defeated their neighbours in the 50-over World Cup match, and now they can add a T20I victory to their resume. In the first innings, captain Andrew Balbirnie scored a masterful 62, and some accurate bowling, most notably from Joshua Little, prevented England from completing the successful pursuit.
5. Zimbabwe vs Pakistan
Zimbabwe’s epic victory over Pakistan was a match unlike any other and had the highest level of drama.
At the halfway point, after Zimbabwe had fought their way up to 130, the result seemed incredibly unlikely. However, the brilliant Sikandar Raza’s triple-wicket spell tore through the Pakistan middle order to set up a thrilling conclusion.
Pakistan suffered heartbreak off the final ball for the second straight match. This time, Pakistan was defeated by the bat, with Brad Evans holding them to 11 runs in the final over.
Pakistan had to get three runs off the final ball due to a wicket off the previous ball, but they were unable to do so as a run out set off joyous scenes in Perth.
