T20 World Cup 2022: In a Group 2 Super 12 encounter in the T20 World Cup 2022, Netherlands defeated South Africa by 13 runs in what is arguably the biggest upset in World Cup history. The victory eliminated South Africa from the competition, who had earlier been the early favourites to go to the semifinal, and helped India in becoming the first team from Group 2 to advance to the last four.
Netherlands, who were given the opportunity to bat, scored 158/4, a total that ultimately proved to be too much for South Africa to overcome. At any point in the innings, their batting simply could not get going, and the Dutch seized the chance to win the game for all time. Last hopes for South Africa were on the shoulders of David Miller, their star player. However, once he got out due to an incredible catch, made racing behind by Roelof van der Merwe, it was Netherlands’ match.
Van Der Merwe had played for South Africa during 2009-2011
It’s interesting to consider that van der Merwe, 37, was formerly a South African player, and that today his catch served as the game’s significant moment. From 2009 to 2011, Van der Merwe played for South Africa and participated in 26 games before hanging up his boots. He did, however, obtain a Dutch passport in 2015, and in July of that year, he made his debut for the Netherlands, becoming the fifth cricketer to play in T20Is for two different international teams.
Despite just taking one wicket during the T20 World Cup, Van der Merwe’s catch will go down as the most important learning experience and be recalled for a very long time. Brandon Glover, who finished with stunning figures of 3/9, edged a pull to Miller at short fine leg, and van der Merwe, fielding at short fine leg, was alert to the situation. He ran backwards at that moment. He didn’t lose sight of the ball as he ran behind and made a fantastic catch that might be a nomination for catch of the competition.
