WTC Final 2023: Another final, another loss. Since 2013, India has lost 9 major ICC tournaments. A team that felt like the biggest team in the world is just a mere representation of that now. A team that never uses to lose has been falling short for almost a decade now. The cruel loss in WTC 2023 final should be a wakeup call for the players, the board and the selection committee. Analyzing what went wrong and what could have been is what we Indians have been doing for a while now. But now that we have calmed down, let’s take a look at what were the reasons that led to yet another loss in another major final.
No.1 Bowler Benched
No matter what kind of pitch it is, you can’t bench the world’s no.1 bowler. Because a spinner as smart as Ashwin, who is regarded as a scientist with the ball, does not rely on pitch to help him.
He lets the ball do the talking and he comes prepare with a strategy for every single opposition batsman. The way Lyon was turning the ball in the fourth inning, India surely missed Ashwin big time.
Temperament?
Not long ago we were the nation with a batting lineup that was able to play whole day without any problem. The land of Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman is struggling to find a batsmen who can bat even half a day. Ajinkya Rahane was the player who played the highest amount of deliveries from Indian Camp. And he was not even in the top 5 of amount of deliveries faced by a batsman in WTC 2023 final. Rohit Sharma got out on an irresponsible shot, not what a captain should be doing in that time. Pujara once again failed to show why he deserve this chance and Virat Kohli once again got out the same way we have seen 100 times before.
Mentality Monsters to Frail Mentality
Say whatever you want to say about Ravi Shastri. His main aim was to always bowl out the opposition no matter what the circumstances were. We have seen lots of scenarios under Shastri where team India upset hundreds of hurdles and came out on top.
Rahul Dravid is an amazing coach and we have seen his impact in all the youngsters. But on this stage, is he the right man to coach India and take the team forward?
Injuries
Injuries to the core players also affected India in a major way. Players like Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant were immensely missed. And it is always a beautiful thing to imagine what could have been if there players were present.
Wake Up Call for BCCI
This loss must serve as a wakeup call for BCCI. They have to take some harsh decisions now. They have to prioritize what they want to achieve. Is IPL more important to them than ICC trophies? Time to act is now. Some harsh decision must be taken. Players have to be skimmed out. Young players must be given a chance.
