Top 5 sporting events in 2022: How eventful has 2022 been! There was much for everyone to enjoy, love, and even celebrate, even though we also faced some of the most difficult times. Sports-related events have occasionally made the news, sometimes for the right reasons and sometimes for other reasons.
As 2022 draws to a close, let’s take a look at the top 5 sporting events that garnered media attention.
5. Cricket – T20 World Cup Match between India and Pakistan
There is nothing more eventful in both the neighbouring nations than cricket, and it is even more special if it includes both of them in the same match. The teams collided in the WC this year. Batting first, Pakistan made 159-8. However, India came to bat in the second inning and had a very shaky start.
After losing four wickets in seven overs, Virat Kohli took on the lead and scored 82* off 53. Cricketing community hailed it as one of the best knock ever.
4. Cricket – Australia women’s win maiden title at Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games had previously included cricket, however it was later removed. It was a bit seductive for the decision-makers to bring this game with this format back into the Games after the introduction of the quick-paced T20 format.
After a hard battle in group stage, Australia and India made it to the finals. Women in Blue could not win the match and Australia Women teams managed to win the maiden gold award.
3. Olympic gold medallist Neeraj became first Indian to win gold at Diamonds League
Neeraj Chopra, the new face of India, made history in 2022 by being the first Indian to win the gold medal in Diamond League after capturing his first Olympic gold medal in the javelin throw event at the Tokyo Games in 2020.
Neeraj, who eclipsed Usain Bolt as the athlete in 2022 who received the greatest media attention, won the gold medal with the best throw of 88.44 metres on his second attempt.
2. Roger Federer’s retirement
Tennis legend Roger Federer of Switzerland announced his retirement from competitive tennis in 2022. On September 15, the 20-time Grand Slam champion notified everyone of his decision in a post on his social media accounts.
Federer cited the same reason for his retirement—a knee issue he had been dealing with for a while. Since Wimbledon 2021, the six-time ATP Masters champion has not participated in a match of any significance.
1. Lionel Messi and team’s victory in the FIFA World Cup 2022 final
Argentina won the highly anticipated World Cup by defeating France 4-2 on penalties in what is regarded as the greatest World Cup final in history. Messi, who officially qualifies as the GOAT thanks to this victory, was the tournament’s top performer thanks to his three assists and seven goals. Messi won the Golden Ball for the second time in his career, having previously done it in 2014.
After 36 years, Argentina was finally named world champions.
