According to the police, Gilberto was with his friends on a Colon street when unknown attackers in a taxi fired upon them.

Gilberto Hernandez, a defender, was associated with Club Atlético Independiente de La Chorrera and had most recently featured in a match on August 23 against Real Estelí FC during the Central American Cup, in which his team emerged victorious with a score of 3-1. The club has also expressed their deep condolences and shared a heartfelt tribute for the talented footballer.
Gilberto Hernandez, the defender, made his international debut in March and played in two matches for his national team. The statement by the league read, “The Panamanian Football League regrets the sad loss of Gilberto Hernández, a player for Club Atlético Independiente, in an isolated act of violence in the city of Colón, who also left several injured.”
On Monday, September 4, the national police released a statement confirming the arrest of a suspect in connection with the incident. The attack resulted in seven people sustaining injuries in addition to the tragic death of Gilberto. It’s worth noting that Panama is currently grappling with a significant issue of gun violence. Authorities attribute this problem to conflicts between drug gangs, which have escalated in the region.
