MS Dhoni: The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, and former India skipper, MS Dhoni, will inaugurate a new stand at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, just in time for upcoming India vs Australia 3rd ODI. The stand, which will be called the M Karunanidhi Stand, pays tribute to the former Tamil Nadu chief minister. It will also feature the revamped Anna Pavilion, equipped with a state-of-the-art indoor training facility on the ground floor.
When will the new stand inaugurated?
On March 17, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will inaugurate a new stand at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in honour of MK Stalin’s late father, a former Tamil Nadu chief minister who served five terms between 1969 and 2011. The new stand, dedicated to M Karunanidhi, will be accompanied by a new Madras Cricket Club stand.
The ceremony will be graced by the presence of India’s former captain, MS Dhoni, and the Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhyanidhi Stalin. The MA Chidambaram Stadium, which is the second-oldest stadium in India after Eden Gardens, has been undergoing renovations in preparation for the 2023 50-over World Cup. The newly-renovated stands will be open to the public during the third and final ODI between India and Australia, taking place on March 22.
Rare exception for M Karunanidhi
The TNCA has made a rare exception by honouring the late M Karunanidhi, a five-time Chief Minister, with a stand at Chepauk despite none of the stands being named after any former players, administrators or politicians. Karunanidhi was a regular at games in Chepauk throughout his political career and was elected as an MLA during his last two terms as Chief Minister. In addition, a museum chronicling the history of TNCA is also underway. The two new stands are expected to increase the stadium’s capacity to almost 38,000, making it a grand spectacle for cricket fans.
