In Dubai on Saturday, the captain of the United Arab Emirates, Muhammad Waseem, displayed an impressive performance by scoring 55 runs. His contribution led the team to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand, effectively tying the three-match T20 series. Despite losing opener Aryansh Sharma early in the run chase, the UAE team remained resilient. Waseem, along with Vriitya Aravind (25), stabilized the innings. With a target of 143 to win after once again choosing to bowl first, Waseem’s 29-ball innings included four fours and three sixes.
His innings concluded when he was caught at extra cover after skying a delivery from left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner. Asif Khan played a crucial role in the victory, remaining undefeated with 48 runs. He sealed the win with flair, hitting three boundaries off New Zealand’s Tim Southee in the 16th over. This remarkable feat secured a historic victory for the UAE with a comfortable 26 balls to spare.
Mark Chapman stood out as the most significant contributor to New Zealand’s final score of 142-8, amassing an impressive 63 runs. Chad Bowes, the opener, and Jimmy Neesham were the sole visitors’ batters to enter double figures, each securing 21 runs. The left-arm spinner Aayan Afzal Khan emerged as a pivotal force, dismantling New Zealand’s top-order.

Khan’s remarkable performance saw him take consecutive wickets by dismissing Santner and Dane Cleaver, followed by getting Bowes stumped. His figures of 3-20 showcased his prowess. Khan’s exceptional display earned him the well-deserved title of man of the match. The series opener on Thursday saw New Zealand clinch victory by 19 runs. The series finale will take place at the same venue, Dubai International Stadium, on Sunday.
