Lionel Messi: In a magnificent display, Kerala’s renowned Thrissur Pooram took place at the esteemed Vadakkunnathan Temple with a captivating procession of beautifully adorned elephants and stunning traditional performances. This grand event captivated many people from various religious backgrounds and age groups, who flocked to the expansive Thekkinkadu Maidan to witness this annual spectacle known as the epitome of temple festivals in the southern state. However, something else has become viral online from the event. During one of the processions, a cutout of Lionel Messi was also seen, which caused a stir on social media.

In a timeless display of customs and traditions, thirty caparisoned elephants, fifteen each from the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady temples, stood face-to-face, symbolizing the rich heritage of centuries past. The highlight of the evening was the renowned ‘Kudamattam’ ritual, which commenced shortly after six in the evening. Stealing the spotlight was the Thiruvambady side, showcasing a remarkable illuminated cutout of Argentina football legend Lionel Messi holding the prestigious FIFA World Cup trophy.

During Kudamattam, vibrant ornamental silk parasols were swiftly exchanged by the individuals mounted on the elephants, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of colour and movement. The umbrellas boasted diverse hues, patterns, and layers, along with illuminated cutouts depicting various deities, including Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvathy, and Lord Krishna.

With a history spanning two centuries, the origins of Thrissur Pooram date back to 1798 when the influential ruler of the former princely state of Cochin, Raja Rama Varma, also known as Shakthan Thampuran, issued a royal edict. This edict designated the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady temples as the principal sponsors of the festival, to be carried out in a spirit of healthy competition.
