US Open 2023: The Flushing Meadows has been magnificent this year as we are seeing so many amazing stories. Rohan Boppana and Matthew Ebden is the same kind of story as the pair was able to reach the finals.
It was a fairy tale run for Boppana as he became the oldest player to reach the finals of Grand Slam in the Open Era. Boppana is 43 years and six months old at the moment and gave every Indian to be proud of him.
After defeat, he was sitting on the bench with towel on his head and hands on forehead, thinking that he was alone. But he was not as he had every Indian behind him who watched hims struggle and flourish throughout the tournament.
US Open 2023: A Fairy Tale Run Ended
It was Bopanna’s first Grand Slam finals in 13 years and he was so close to finish the story as the duo won the first set. But fairy tale soon turned into a bad dream as Boppana-Ebden lost the next two sets.
This would have been the first Grand Slam for Boppana but fate had something else in store for him. The two-time defending champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury were proved too good for our pair.

But the most talked moment of the match came in the third set. While Bopanna-Edben duo won an amazing point after a intense rally, the Indian went to chair umpire to give point to his opponents.
The reason was that Bopanna’s elbow struck the ball as Edben played the shot. The shot was offered at a crucial stage of the match and the deflection was negligible. So negligible that no one in the stadium noticed it other than the pair who took the shot. But it would not have sit right with our duo and they did not want that point.
“That’s the person I have been through my career and I really feel it doesn’t matter what the scoreline or what the occasion of the match is. If something was not right, it was not right,” Bopanna stated after the match.
