Virat Kohli: King Kohli is perhaps the fittest cricket worldwide. The former India captain inspires all of his followers with his social media training videos and amazing commitment to being healthy and strong. Kohli’s story of transformation, where he went from being a chubby youngster to becoming the world’s best batter, is the stuff of legends. Regardless of the conditions, you hardly ever see Kohli physically strain when batting. He is a run machine at all the playing conditions.
Because of this, it was somewhat surprising to watch Kohli panting and having trouble breathing while he was batting in the India vs. Zimbabwe T20 World Cup Super-12 match on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium. The camera saw Kohli gazing down in the pitch, collecting his breath, and even holding his chest in an unusual sight as he batted alongside KL Rahul after Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat.
In the seventh over of India’s innings, Kohli and Rahul sprinted and finished a third run, which is when the incident occurred. After hitting a gorgeous cover drive through the biggest square area on the ground, Kohli scored four runs to start his innings. He then moved up to three.
In the first delivery of the seventh over, Kohli drove the ball against the turn and collected a boundary, but because the ball beat the fielder just short of the boundary, he was already in position for the second. When the bowler threw the next pitch, Kohli struck the ball in the same location to score another couple of runs. Kohli had to stop and catch his breath when the arduous jogging caught up to him.
Gavaskar praised Virat Kohli on air
“He is such a quick runner between the wicket. Always looking for the extra run. You could see that the moment he played it, he knew where the fielder was, knew the power that he had. And so, the second was always going to be on. Just giving himself a little bit of a breather,” Gavaskar said while on air.
As Rahul set the terms and played the aggressor at the other end, Kohli was once more batting like a million bucks. However, after making 26 off 25 ball, Kohli, who appeared to be on track for another huge score, fell against the flow of the game, holing out in the deep where Ryan Burl took a fine catch off the bowling of Sean Williams.
