Virat Kohli: Former India captain and star batsman for Royal Challengers Bangalore Virat Kohli has discussed the significance of wearing the number 18, claiming that there must be a cosmological explanation behind this. Since he first played for India, Kohli has worn the number 18 jersey.
How Virat Kohli’s Journey with Number 18 Started
In an interview with Star Sports, Kohli disclosed that when he started for India in the Under-19 World Cup in 2008, he was assigned the number 18 jersey. In March 2008, Kohli led India to the Under-19 World Cup with a victory over South Africa in the championship match. Kohli said, “To be honest 18 started off just being a number that was given to me when I opened that first India U19 jersey. I never asked for it, it was just given to me.”
Virat Kohli’s Personal Milestones Tied to the Number 18
He continued by stating that the number became meaningful to him because two of the most critical occasions in his life occurred on 18 and 19. For India, Kohli has amassed over 25,000 runs in 497 games across all formats. Kohli added, “But then it ended up becoming a very important number in my life. My debut came for India on 18th of August, 2008. My father passed away on the 18th of December, 2006. Two of the most significant dates in my life happened to be 18.” In addition to claiming that there must be a cosmic significance to the number 18, Kohli claimed it still seems weird to him when he sees fans donning his shirt. While playing 235 games and collecting 7,062 runs for his IPL team RCB, Kohli also won the coveted number 18 shirt.
