Virat Kohli: Virat Kohli has registered yet another giant record on his name as he surpassed Sri Lankan legend Mahela jayawardene to become the top scorer of T20 World Cup. Mahela held the record with 1016 runs on his name, which he achieved in 2014.
While playing against Bangladesh in their fourth group match in Adelaide, Kohli broke the record. He achieved this feat with a strike rate of more than 130 and an average of over 80 in T20 World Cups. On Wednesday, in the seventh over of India’s innings,It was the thirteenth ball he had faced. He flicked Ahmed to midwicket for a single, marking the run that moved him past Jayawardene.
In only his 23rd innings of play in his sixth T20 World Cup, Kohli, who has hit 12 half-centuries, surpassed the previous record holder. Jayawardene, in contrast, actually played 31 innings to set his record.
Virat Kohli is also highest run-scorer in T20I
Prior to getting bowled out for 12 against South Africa, Kohli had 845 runs going into the 2022 T20 World Cup and had scored two straight undefeated half-centuries, one each against Pakistan and the Netherlands. He moved into second place on the list of all-time run scorers in the T20 World Cup thanks to his return to form, trailing only Tillakaratne Dilshan (897), Rohit Sharma (904) and Chris Gayle (965) until passing Jayawardene in the match against Bangladesh.
In terms of total runs scored in all T20 international matches, Kohli holds the record and is in front of Rohit, Martin Guptill, Babar Azam, and Paul Stirling. In T20Is, Kohli is very close to the four thousand run mark and averages over fifty with a strike rate of almost one hundred and forty.
