BCCI: Recent media reports have suggested that BCCI offered Virender Sehwag the job of Indian team Chief Selector. India has been hunting for a new chief selector after Chetan Sharma resigned from the job six months back.

With the World Cup closing, BCCI is looking to sort out the chief selector position as soon as possible. The new chairman should be from the North Zone, just like Chetan Sharma, according to BCCI guidelines.

And when you are talking about North Zone, Virender Sehwag is the first name that comes into your mind. The Nawab Of Nazafgarh was even approached by BCCI with a job offer. It was also revealed that Sehwag was asked to apply for the Head Coach job. It later went to Anil Kumble.

Low Salary by BCCI?

According to a PTI report, the low salary of the Chief Selector is preventing big-name ex-cricketers from taking up the job. The retired players earn way more by doing anchoring, pre-match shows, and from all the endorsements.

According to the report, The chief selector of the Indian team earns 1 crore annually, while the other four selectors earn 90 lakhs per annum. This low pay is one reason that prevents big-name players from taking the job.

“During CoA’s time, Viru (Sehwag) was asked to apply for the head coach’s job, and then it went to Anil Kumble. It is unlikely he will apply himself, and also, the pay package isn’t something that will be financially viable for someone of his stature,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI.

Other Candidates

As of now, Virender Sehwag is the only big-name candidate from the North Zone. A big name is necessary for the selection committee. So that he can assert his dominance over the team and make smart decisions around it without being thrown away.

Other players like Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, and Yuvraj Singh have not completed the criteria. Criteria of being retired for 5 years to apply for the job. So, if BCCI does not increase the salary, we might not see a big name being part of the selection committee.
