India vs. Bharat: Former cricketer Virender Sehwag released a comprehensive statement on Wednesday regarding the ongoing discussion about the rumoured switch from the official English name ‘India’ to ‘Bharat.’ This came a day after he expressed support for the potential name change and called upon India’s cricket board to include “Bharat” on team jersey.
Sehwag tweets in favour of name change
Sehwag emphasized that endorsing the use of “Bharat” as the country’s name should not be misconstrued as a political agenda. Taking to X, Sehwag said, “Funny when people think having a desire that our nation be addressed as Bharat is viewed as a political thing.”
Sehwag further emphasized that he has never harbored any political ambitions, stating that he had turned down offers to run in the last two Lok Sabha elections from “both parties,” referencing to the BJP and Congress. He pointed out that his on-field accomplishments would have been enough to secure a candidacy from either party had he entertained political aspirations. He wrote, “Speaking heart out is different from political aspiration. My only interest is “Bharat.”

Numerous political figures and celebrities spoke about the topic when Rashtrapati Bhavan issued invitations for a G20 dinner on September 9 under the title ‘President of Bharat’ rather than the usual ‘President of India.’ Opposition parties alleged that the BJP was reacting anxiously due to the INDIA bloc. Sehwag’s social media post sparked both enthusiastic support and strong criticism, leaving many to wonder whether he lacked pride in wearing the “India” jersey while representing the country.
