Wasim Akram: Following one of their finest World Cup victories ever, Zimbabwe was in delight on Thursday, while Pakistan’s campaign was hanging in the balance after they lost in Perth. After being taken aback by a run, Pakistan’s destiny now depends on things other than winning their remaining games to advance to the semi-final. The famous bowler Wasim Akram is also upset over the two losses in the T20 World Cup, and skipper Babar Azam has once more questioned Shoaib Malik’s absence.
In light of Pakistan’s struggles in the middle order, many questioned the selectors’ choice to leave the seasoned hitter out of the T20 World Cup team for the tournament in Australia. However, Pakistan was shocked by Zimbabwe on Thursday in the similar situation, leading to a loss for Pakistan.
Speaking in an interview, where Malik was also a panellist, Akram stated that if he had been the captain, he would have fought to keep the former in the team and would have first assured the former’s place in the World Cup squad. He then attacked Babar, saying that his decisions and calls showed a lack of intelligence.
Wasim remarked, “Ek saal se Pakistan, including us (Malik, Waqar Younis and Misbah ul Haq) knew that middle order slightly weak hai. Ab yeh ladka baitha hai Shoaib Malik. Main agar captain hota, mera end goal kya hota…to win the World Cup. Agar uske liye mujhe gadhe ko bhi baap banana pare main banaunga beacuse mujhe World Cup jeetna hain. Agar mujhe Shoaib Malik chaiye toh main chairman and selector ko jaake kahunga ki I will not play World Cup if I don’t get my player. But aisa koi hain nahi. Babar ko aur akalmand hona pardga. Yeh woh moholle ki team nehin hai ki mera jaanne wala aa jayega. Agar main hota toh iss ladke ko (Malik) sabse pehle middle order main leta.”
English translation of his statement: “We have been aware of Pakistan’s shaky middle order for the last year. Shoaib Malik is currently seated here. What would I be trying to accomplish if I were the captain? right, to claim the World Cup? You must make some difficult choices in order to achieve it. If I had needed Malik, I would have told the selectors that I wouldn’t be attending the World Cup without him. This is not a club side, Babar needs to be wiser.”
At Perth Stadium, Pakistan will play their following game against Netherlands on October 30.
