Ryan Ten Doeschate was appointed as India’s team assistant coach not so long ago. It was a coveted position but he had no idea what was in the store when he took the reins alongside Gautam Gambhir.
The former Netherlands all-rounder had no idea that the Blues would be struggling to play against spin. In the recent series loss against Sri Lanka, the Indian team was outplayed by spin.
That was one of the reasons why BCCI and Gambhir made sure that every player started playing in the domestic season. Doeschate had some harsh words ahead of the home test season of India and how would he like to improve the team.
Work For Ryan Ten Doeschate
The Indian assistant coach stated, “One of the challenges I wasn’t expecting and I kind of overlooked is the playing of spin by Indian batters.” Indian teams have always taken pride in themselves in the way they play spin.
Some of the best batsmen in the world against spin are from India only. So, it was obvious that Doeschate did not expect that to be the area of concern. He stated that the reason for this and how he would like this challenge.
“The mindset of India has been such that they’ve been so desperate to do well overseas. The focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England [so] that we’ve kind of let playing spin, which was always a strength of the Indian team, fall back a little bit.”
‘Looking Forward To It’
However, the newly appointed assistant coach thinks of this challenge as an opportunity. He is looking forward to it and stated that it is the mindset that needs changing. Because the talent is already there.
He further added, “It’s exciting and kind of daunting at the same time. In terms of what we’re looking forward to, qualifying for the WTC final. There’s a great opportunity with 10 Tests left, five in India is going to be great.”
