PR Sreejesh was like a wall for the Indian hockey team for more than a decade. With him guarding the net, defending became so much easier. Now that he is retired, India needs to find his replacement. A position with massive shoes to fill.
The 38-year-old is settling into his new life and is ready to take the coaching position at the Junior India team. It will be exciting to see Sreejesh shaping up next-gen goalkeepers.
But one thing that stood the goalkeeper apart from everyone was his fighting spirit. Even when everything seemed lost, he kept doing one thing he knew best, guarding the goalpost. And it worked most of the time.
In an exclusive interview, Sreejesh opened up about one disappointing thing about the Paris Olympics 2024. And how they wanted to do so much more than reality.
PR Sreejesh Wanted Gold
The goalkeeper stated that the Blues had everything going on in their favor in Paris and should have won the gold. He further stated that it was disappointing considering the quality of the players.
He believes that India had the caliber to play Paris Olympics final. Even though he was disappointed about the past, he looked at the future with a positive intent and stated, “One day we will be the best team in the world.”
The two-time Olympic Bronze medallist also stated how tough and lonely goalkeeping is. “Even when you save or concede, a goalkeeper stands alone. He is not like the 10 other players on the pitch.”
‘We Pamper Players’
We might also have gotten a glimpse of Sreejesh’s coaching style as he stated that Indians tend to pamper players. He is a firm believer that an athlete should always be challenged and he will always put his player in pressure situations.
