West Indies: Following the Caribbean team’s failure to advance to the Super 12 round of the current T20 World Cup, West Indies head coach Phil Simmons will quit his position at the end of this year.
The most successful T20 World Cup squad, with victories in 2012 and 2016, was eliminated from the competition in the group stage following losses to Scotland and Ireland. Even though they defeated Zimbabwe in the round-robin league, they still placed last out of the four teams.

Since the 2007 inaugural competition in South Africa, this was the first time the West Indies failed to move past the group stage. “His last assignment will be the upcoming two-Test series against Australia from 30 November to 12 December,” Cricket West Indies (CWI) said in a statement.
According to certain sources in the local media, his contract calls for him to give his employers 12 weeks’ notice, therefore his departure will take place in January of the following year. The 59-year-old, a former all-rounder for West Indies, called the team’s early elimination from the T20 World Cup incomprehensible.

“I acknowledge that it’s not just the team that is hurting but the proud nations we represent as well. It’s disappointing and heart wrenching but we just didn’t turn up,” Simmons said in the statement.
When West Indies defeated England at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata to win their second T20 World Cup championship in 2016, he was in charge of the situation. Simmons was reassigned as head coach in October 2019 for a four-year term after his initial brief spell. He was, however, controversially fired at that time as well.

In order to win the Richards-Botham Trophy earlier this year, Simmons led West Indies to a tenacious 1-0 Test series victory over England at home. West Indies also triumphed in a recent Test series against Bangladesh under his direction.
