A conference was held on July 30 by outgoing Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to choose candidates for the eagerly anticipated WFI elections, which have been set for August 12 after numerous postponements.
It is anticipated that Brij Bhushan would choose his campaign team. The conference is anticipated to begin on Sunday at 11 IST in New Delhi.
Inder Bhushan The WFI electoral college does not include Sharan Singh or his son Karan. Vishal Singh, the incoming president’s son-in-law, is likely to run for a high position, nevertheless. Vishan is the Bihar representative. Notably, July 31 is the deadline for submitting nominations.
Brij Bhushan is ineligible to run since the National Sports Code only permits officeholders to serve for a maximum of 12 years at a time.
The WFI was suspended twice—first in January, then again in May—after India’s top wrestlers challenged its operation and claimed that Brij Bhushan, the organization’s then president, had harassed female wrestlers. Currently, an ad hoc committee chaired by Bhupender Singh Bajwa and established by the Indian Olympic Association is in charge of running the day-to-day operations of the WFI.
Notably, the United World Wrestling, the sport’s highest authority, threatened to suspend WFI if the elections were postponed.
