WFI: A dark and shameful day has struck in Indian sporting history as United World Wrestling has suspended WFI membership. The WFI’s inability to hold the elections has resulted in them getting their membership suspended.
This decision of suspension is like a black spot in Indian wrestling history. It will also act as a major setback to Indin wrestlers. Indian wrestlers won’t be able to compete under their tri-color at the upcoming Olympics.
The controversy regarding WFI and Indian wrestlers has been broiling for a few months now. As the sexual harassment allegations against former chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh took all the headlines.
A Dark Day For WFI
The Indian Olympic Association appointed an HOC Committee to look over the wrestling in the country. There were directives to hold fresh elections in 45 days but because of various reasons have been delayed till now.
The United World Wrestling had already released a statement back in May. Stating that a possible suspension is on the cards if the 45-day deadline is not respected. After waiting for a long time, UWW finally decided to suspend WFI membership.
Wrestlers Under Neutral Flag
UWW had also stated that if the elections are not conducted in 45 days the wrestlers will have to compete under a neutral flag. The statement released by UWW back in May also confirmed that the Asian Championship planned in New Delhi was also relocated because of this reason only.
With this ban, Indian wrestlers will have to compete under a neutral flag in the upcoming Olympic trials starting on September 16. If WFI does not sort this out soon, we might see the wrestlers under a neutral flag in upcoming tournaments as well.
