With Gautam Gambhir close to being announced as the next Indian head coach, a million-dollar question arises for the future of Kolkata Knight Riders. After all, KKR achieved their best-ever season with Gambhir as their mentor.
Shahrukh Khan approached Gambhir earlier this year to come back to KKR. The former KKR skipper had already made plans to skip IPL 2024 to focus on the general election in India.
But as SRK approached him, Gambhir changed his plans and went back to his old franchise. His achievement as KKR coach put him as the frontrunner for the Indian head coach position. But this raises the question, what will happen to KKR if Gambhir is India’s new head coach?
The Blank Cheque
Various media reports came after IPL 2024 suggested that Shah Rukh Khan offered Gambhir a blank cheque to continue with KKR for more years. But that does not seem feasible now.
According to the official rules, the Indian team head coach can not coach or be a part of any franchise team in the IPL or any other tournament. This means that Gambhir won’t be a part of the KKR team in 2025.
Life After Gautam Gambhir
This is going to make 2025 tough for KKR. They not only have to find a new mentor but also have to do squad planning without him. IPL 2025 will start with a mega auction and almost every team will go on a big overhaul depending on the allowed retentions.
KKR will also have to release so many players that helped them win the title in 2024. Gambhir was the main brain behind the team in 2024 and it will be brutal to let him and half of the team go in the next IPL.
If Gambhir is announced as the new head coach of the Indian team, he will take over the team after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. So, SRK or KKR won’t have any time to discuss strategy for next year with him.
