Stan Wawrinka is one of the few players who have defeated Novak Djokovic in the finals of a Grand Slam. And he has done it more than once. With Djokovic booking his place in the third round and Wawrinka also marching past challengers, their match-up is inevitable.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion has faced Wawrinka 26 times in his career. With the Serbian having a superior record of 20-6. But the two wins out of 6 by Wawrinka came in Grand Slam finals and Novak never forgets that.
Wimbledon 2023: Intense Rivalry
Novak Djokovic defeated Jordan Thompson in the second round in straight sets to book his place in the third round. The Serbian Tennis star never looked puzzled or did struggle against his opponent and registered a fairly one-sided win.
On the other hand, Stan Wawrinka is set to face Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the second round. If Wawrinka wins against the Argentina tennis player, he will face Djokovic in the third round. Many fans have already predicted that this will be the third-round match-up.
Cost Me Two Grand Slam
In the post-match interview, Djokovic was in a jolly mood. He praised Wawrinka and jokingly stated that the Swiss international has cost Djokovic two grand slams. He also called Wawrinka inspirational and someone to look up to.
“Well, he took away two Grand Slams from me. That’s the role he played (in my career), beating me in two Grand Slam finals (smiling). No, I like Stan a lot. He’s a great person. Really always inspirational what he’s doing at his age. He’s almost 40 years old. and he still keeps going strong. That’s something that not many people can do.” The 23-time grand slam champion stated.
