WPL 2023 Final: The final match of the first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) began at Braborune Stadium. The captain of the Delhi Capitals team, Meg Lanning, chose to bat first after winning the toss. However, this decision didn’t turn out well as two players got out in just one over. Issy Wong, who performed well in the Eliminator a few days ago by taking a hattrick, took two wickets in her very first over and dismissed Shafali Verma and Alice Capsey. However, Shafali’s wicket has now grabbed eyeballs as fans allege that she was dismissed on a no-ball.
Controversial wicket in WPL 2023 final
The pacer from Mumbai Indians team took both wickets on full-toss deliveries in the second over of the match, which was her first ever in the innings. Although Alice Capsey’s dismissal was considered fair, there was some controversy around Shafali’s dismissal. Shafali first hit the bowler for 6 and 4 respectively in the first two balls. Then, Wong bowled a slower full-toss delivery outside the off stump, and Shafali played it to the backward point fielder, who eventually caught the ball. The on-field umpire declared her out, but Verma and Lanning demanded a review.
But with the ball tracker showing the ball dipping at the end, the TV umpire retained the on-field decision and Verma was adjudged out. While MI Women were jumping for joy, DC Women had clear disappointment on their faces. The fans were also left angered as they saw the replay on the screen, and alleged of cheating by the umpire.
