WPL Auction: The Women’s Premier League (WPL) recently made its debut, with its first auction taking place on February 13th, 2023. Leading Indian player Smriti Mandhana was the first player to be put up for auction, starting with a base price of 50 Lakhs. The bidding was intense, with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore going head to head. Eventually, Mumbai Indians dropped out and Bangalore emerged as the winning bidder, securing a contract with Smriti for a whopping 3.4 Crore for the inaugural WPL season. This historic event marks the first time a women’s cricketer has received such a large sum of money, eliciting excitement among the entire Indian Women’s national team, who were watching the WPL Auction 2023 live from South Africa, where they were competing in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. The team had already begun their journey with a win against Pakistan Women.
Smriti will now join the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad, wearing the same jersey number as team captain Virat Kohli, #18. The team was eagerly following the auction live, and the volume rose as the bidding crossed the 2-Crore mark and reached an even higher peak when it reached 2.5 Crore. Finally, there was a massive cheer as Smriti was officially sold to Bangalore for a career-changing 3.4 Crore fee, a record-breaking amount for female athletes in the sport.
