Wrestlers Protest: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh is currently facing allegations of sexual harassment, which has prompted a continuous protest by the country’s top wrestlers. This development has gained considerable attention in recent days, drawing widespread public interest. Notably, seven female wrestlers, including a minor, have come forward to file complaints against Brij Bhushan, citing incidents of sexual harassment.
Consequently, the ongoing protest has elicited responses from numerous athletes across the country. Nevertheless, the lack of acknowledgement from several prominent Indian cricketers has drawn criticism, particularly from Vinesh Phogat. The accomplished World Championship medalist criticized the silence of the Indian cricketers, launching a scathing attack against them.
Vinesh Phogat speaks on silence by cricketers
She stated, “The entire country worships cricket but not even a single cricketer has spoken up. We aren’t saying that you speak in our favour, but at least put up a neutral message and say there should be justice for whichever party.”
Continuing further, she stated, “It’s not like we don’t have big athletes in our country. There are cricketers… During the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, they showed their support. Don’t we deserve even that much?”
She even said that they (cricketers) congratulated when the wrestlers brought medals but are silent now. “You do come forward to congratulate us when we win something. Even the cricketers tweet when that happens. Abhi kya ho gaya? (What has happened now?) Are you so afraid of the system? Unke daal mein bhi kaala hai, yeh maan ke chale hum? (Or maybe there’s something fishy going on there too?)”
Kapil Dev and Neeraj Chopra lend their support
Kapil Dev, the captain who led India to victory in the 1983 World Cup, swiftly responded to the ongoing protests and expressed his support for the wrestlers through an Instagram story. Following suit, Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan broke their silence on Friday (April 28), urging for timely justice to prevail. However, notable figures such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Sachin Tendulkar, and MS Dhoni have yet to offer their response.
Earlier on the same day, Neeraj Chopra, the gold medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, also lent his support to the protesting wrestlers and shared his opinion on Twitter.
