Wrestler’s Protest: Following a late-night meeting on Friday between the wrestlers and the Sports Minister, the continuing protest by wrestlers at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar has ended. As the meeting concluded successfully, wrestlers also withdrew their protest. A committee has also been established; it will deliver its report in 4 weeks. The investigating committee will oversee the Wrestling Federation of India’s operations while the investigation is ongoing.
WFI President steps aside from position
The present president of the wrestling association, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, has agreed to stand down from his position until the inquiry is over and to assist with it. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), who was challenged, has been relieved of his powers as the first step in resolving the complaints of the wrestlers.
Following the conclusion of the second round of negotiations with Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, additional wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Banjrag Punia, Sakshi Malik, and Ravi Dahiya made the decision to stop their protest.
Notably, the wrestlers had accused the Wrestling Federation of India’s president and other members of the organisation of sexual harassment and corruption.
Monitoring committee to be named on Saturday
The formation of a monitoring committee, whose members will be named on Saturday, it was decided, according to Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, following the long meeting. In four weeks, this committee will wrap up its study. All accusations of sexual harassment or corruption against the WFI and its president will be thoroughly looked into by this committee.
Anurag Thakur said that until the inquiry is over, Singh would refrain from carrying out the duties of the president and will cooperate with the probe, with the monitoring committee in charge of managing the day-to-day operations of WFI.
Notably, the Indian Olympic Association constituted a seven-person committee earlier on Friday to look into the accusations of sexual exploitation made against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India. Along with Mary Kom, Yogeshwar Dutt, Dola Banerjee, Alaknanda Ashok, Sahdev Yadav, and two attorneys, this committee is made up.
