Wrestling Federation of India President Defends Appointment Amid Athlete Protests

In the wake of Sakshi Malik’s unexpected retirement and the voluntary return of Padma Shri awards by wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Virender Yadav, the newly-elected president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Sanjay Singh, defended himself against the athletes’ protests.

Sanjay Singh Addresses Criticism from Wrestlers Over His Presidency

Sakshi, Bajrang, and Virender protested against Sanjay Singh’s appointment, citing his close association with Brij Bhushan Singh. In response, Sanjay Singh emphasized that athletes’ retirement decisions are personal and refrained from commenting further on the matter.

Addressing the criticism, Sanjay Singh stated, “Those who are athletes have already started preparing, and those who want to engage in politics can do that. It is their personal matter; I will not speak about this. I have been in the federation for 12 years. Just because I am close to MP (Brij Bhushan) does not mean I am a dummy candidate. Is it a crime if I am close to him?” Sanjay Singh told reporters.

The controversy highlights the intersection of sports and politics within the wrestling community, with athletes expressing dissent over administrative appointments in the federation.
