Supreme Court Overturns High Court Stay
The Punjab and Haryana High Court’s stay was recently overturned by the Supreme Court, opening the door for the election of the new WFI governing body. The chief of the Wushu Association of India, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, is leading an ad-hoc panel appointed by the IOA to oversee the day-to-day operations of the WFI. This comes after the sports ministry suspended the federation, which was led by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, due to accusations of sexual harassment made by prominent Indian grapplers.
Wrestlers’ Protest at Jantar Mantar
For more than two months, a number of wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, sat in protest at the Jantar Mantar here over claims that Brij Bhushan had harassed female grapplers sexually. Court cases have caused the election process, which was scheduled to begin in July, to be delayed. This has further resulted in United World Wrestling, the international federation, suspending the WFI for not conducting new polls within their allotted time frame.
