Wrestlers Protest: Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and a BJP member, said on Sunday that he would run in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections scheduled for next year. Brij Bhushan, who has been accused of sexual harassment by several wrestlers, declared he would unquestionably run for office in the Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha district of Kaisarganj. The BJP MP told the news agency PTI, “Kaiserganj Lok Sabha seat se chunav ladunga, ladunga, ladunga (I will definitely contest from Kaiserganj)”.
Political Career of Brij Bhushan Singh and Response to Sexual Harassment Allegations
The Kaisarganj Lok Sabha constituency has been represented by Brij Bhushan Singh three times, the first time as an SP MP (from 2009 to 2014). He won the 1991 and 1999 Lok Sabha elections from the Gonda seat on BJP tickets, and the general elections in 2004 from the Balrampur Lok Sabha seat. He is now a Lok Sabha MP serving his sixth term. When asked why he was delaying commenting on the sexual harassment claims made against him by prominent wrestlers like Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia, the WFI president said that he was awaiting the court’s decision.
Delhi Police Investigation and FIRs Filed Against Brij Bhushan Singh
Recently, the Delhi Police, who are looking into the accusations made against Brij Bhushan, went to his home to interview 12 persons. The names, residences, and identification cards of those who provided statements were gathered by the police. After receiving a directive from the Supreme Court, the Delhi Police filed two FIRs against the WFI chief. He was charged in the FIRs that were filed in response to a Supreme Court decision under several Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections, including assaulting a lady to violate her modesty (section 354), sexual harassment (354A), and stalking (354D), all of which carry two- to three-year prison sentences. Brij Bhushan Singh denied the allegations of sexual harassment and threatened to commit suicide if even one of the claims were found to be true.
