Zagreb Open Grand Prix: The highly-anticipated series which is scheduled to take place from February 1–5, has received official approval for the participation of a 55-member Indian wrestling team, featuring Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat.
Oversight Committee approves these players
12 female wrestlers, 11 Greco-Roman competitors, and 13 male freestyle competitors were chosen by the newly established five-member oversight committee for the Ranking Series debut. Anshu Malik, Deepak Punia, and Ravi Kumar Dahiya, who won the silver medal in the Olympics, are also on the squad, according to a ministry announcement. The government also said it will cover all of the wrestlers’ expenses.
The oversight committee was established by the sports ministry earlier this week to manage the day-to-day operations of the sports organisation as well as to investigate the allegations, including those of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan, the president of the Wrestling Federation of India.
Wrestlers earlier staged a protests
The committee was led by famed boxer MC Mary Kom and included former wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, former badminton star Trupti Murgunde, former TOPS CEO Rajagopalan, and former SAI executive director – teams Radhica Sreeman. The wrestlers, on the other hand, had voiced dissatisfaction at not having been contacted before the committee was established.
Last week, Bajrang, Vinesh, and Ravi Dahiya organised a three-day sit-in demonstration at Jantar Mantar to call for the ouster of the WFI president. The wrestlers had accused Sharan, who is also a BJP MP, of acting like a despot and molesting young wrestlers sexually. However, they withheld the names of the players who experienced sexual harassment.
