Heatwave: At least 98 people have died in states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh in last three days as North India is sweltered under extreme heatwave. While 54 people have died in Uttar Pradesh, 44 lives in Bihar have been claimed by the severe heat. Between 15th and 17th June, 54 people admitted to Ballia district hospital in Uttar Pradesh have lost their lives. Most of the casualties have been of the people aged above 60 said Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Jayant Kumar of Ballia district hospital. As per the statement by the official 23 deaths were reported on June 15, 20 on June 16 and 11 on June 17.
Increased prepardness
The Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) Diwakar Singh stated that more fans, coolers and air conditioners have been arranged in the hospital to provide respite from heat. The hospital has been properly equipped to prevent the risk of heatstroke in patients. The number of doctors and paramedical staff has also been increased due to the influx of patients, he added. A shortage in hospital beds due to increasing number of patients has been reported by one official. As per India Meteorological Data (IMD), temperatures in Ballia are 4.7 degrees above normal.

Deaths in Bihar
Out of 44 lives claimed by the heatwave in state, 35 deaths have happened in Patna alone. In Patna, 19 patients have died in Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) and 16 in Patna Medical College (PMCH). The mercury in at least 11 districts surged past 44 degrees C with a severe heatwave on Saturday. Schools in Patna have been shut till June 24 with other districts in the state are set to follow suit.
