Aam Aadmi Party: With an overwhelming margin of more than 58,000 votes, the Aam Aadmi Party has ended the 24-year hold that the Congress had over the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency. Sushil Kumar Rinku, a former Congress lawmaker from the Jalandhar West constituency in the previous assembly who switched to the AAP, defeated his closest rival, Karamjit Kaur, the wife of Santokh Chaudhary, whose death during the Bharat Jodo Yatra necessitated the by-poll, by more than 58,000 votes in the four-cornered race.
AAP’s unprecedented victory in Jalandhar by-polls
AAP has now re-entered the Lok Sabha. The first Lok Sabha MP for the AAP, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, left the lower house after being chosen as an MLA in the Punjab assembly elections last year. However, his party was unable to hold onto the seat in the by-elections. The “unprecedented victory,” according to Arvind Kejriwal, is a result of the Bhagwant Mann administration’s successful efforts in Punjab. Bhagwant Mann, who was accompanying Mr. Kejriwal, stated, “We do the politics of work and seek votes from people for our work, and people have put a stamp on Bhagwant Mann government’s work saying ‘we are with you’… This is a tremendous message.
