Nagpur Weather Update: As India continues to experience extreme heatwaves, Nagpur is in the epicentre of one such heatwave, with temperatures reaching an incredible 56 degrees Celsius. Nagpur is currently experiencing harsh temperature conditions, just days after Delhi saw its own heatwave.
Unprecedented Heatwave in Nagpur
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Nagpur, which is renowned for its scorching summers, has experienced record highs of above 50 degrees Celsius. Alarming highs were recorded by the city’s automatic weather stations (AWS). In Ramdaspeth, one station registered a sweltering 56 degrees Celsius, while another station at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Sonegaon recorded 54 degrees.
Comparative Analysis
This heatwave in Nagpur is much hotter than the infamous one in Delhi, where temperatures reached 52.9 degrees Celsius a few days ago. This circumstance reminds of the tremendous heatwave that occurred in the Churu region of Rajasthan, which was previously the warmest district of the season with a temperature of 50.5 degrees Celsius.
Factors Behind the Heatwave
Experts blame a number of things for the unrelenting heatwave, including the scorching air coming from Rajasthan. Vice-president of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet Weather Mahesh Palawat highlights the effect of increased radiation in open spaces, which is made worse by direct sunlight and a lack of shade, making the heat in these locations more intense.
Understanding Heatwave Classification
The Centre and IMD have established standards that state that a heatwave is declared when the actual maximum temperature stays at 45 degrees Celsius or above, irrespective of the typical maximum temperature. Furthermore, various locations have different temperature thresholds, and if the maximum temperature reaches a particular level for several days in a row, a heatwave is declared.
