The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Patna has taken swift action by terminating the service contract of a Delhi-based firm following allegations that its personnel swindled ₹3 lakh from patients. The individuals reportedly tampered with hospitalization bills, utilizing software tools to edit and inflate the amounts. The decision was made two days after HT brought the matter to the attention of AIIMS-Patna’s executive director-cum-chief executive officer, Dr Gopal Krushna Pal, who promptly terminated the three-year service contract that was originally set to end on March 21.
AIIMS-Patna Terminates Service Contract After Personnel Allegedly Tamper with Patient Bills
Since January 2, when the issue was first discovered, over 25 cases have been identified, each exhibiting variations between ₹1,000 and ₹6,000 in the total amount between the actual bill in the hospital information system (HIS) and the manipulated bill presented to patients upon discharge. The fraudulent activity involved downloading the in-patient bills onto computers and then using software tools to edit and inflate the amounts in the PDF copy of the consolidated bill before presenting it to patients or their attendants during discharge.
The fraudulent activity came to light when an individual, seeking reimbursement for his mother’s hospitalization charges through an insurance firm, submitted the bill to AIIMS for verification. Officials discovered the inconsistencies in amounts between the bill and the hospital information system during the verification process.
