Bengal Panchayat Polls: Today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will meet Governor CV Anand Bose of West Bengal at North Block in New Delhi. The Governor flew to Delhi on Sunday and will likely submit a report on violence that transpired during Panchayat election polling in the state. At least 15 people have been reported to have died during the polling on Saturday. The State Election Commission of West Bengal has ordered repolling in more than 600 booths because of booth capturing and other interferences hampering the polling activity.
Violence during Panchayat Polls
The election day of Bengal Panchayat elections saw widespread violence across various districts leading to obstruction in polling.
The State governor visited many places that were affected by violence especially North 24 Parganas district. He met families of the injured workers and supporters and took stock of the situation on ground. Some reports cite that more than 19 people were killed with TMC, BJP and Congress claiming multiple cases of deaths of their supporters and workers.
Repolling in over 600 booths
Following the violence during polls State Election Commission has announced repolling across 697 booths 19 districts. In Murshidabad alone repolling is happening across 175 booths. The repolling began at 7 pm and will continue till 5 pm.
The Governor has prepared of violence during elections and will present it to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Bose has criticized Rajiv Sinha, the state election commissioner(SEC) for not doing his duty properly in lead up to Panchayat elections.
