According to an official of the university, the anti-ragging committee of Jadavpur University (JU) has reported to the University Grants Commission (UGC) the preliminary results of its investigation into the death of an undergraduate student.
Before drafting the report on the death of the 17-year-old kid who was discovered dead in the main hostel on August 10, the panel members met with the students, the hostel- and the university officials. The university established a second internal inquiry committee in the wake of the incident, and this group has likewise documented all parties’ testimony.
Registrar Snehamanju Basu told, “The boy’s death was extremely tragic. Police investigation is under way and we want the guilty to be punished.” “We have zero tolerance towards ragging and will ensure that the university is rid of the menace. We are discussing matters of security and surveillance by taking into confidence all stakeholders,” she said.
Jadavpur University Teachers Association held emergency meeting
The Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA) held an emergency meeting on campus on August 14 where the professors’ body recommended measures such as monitoring the entry of people into the campus and the hostel compound after 7 p.m. with the requirement that they produce ID cards. They also demanded the creation of a post of hostel warden in addition to the superintendent.
“The authorities neglected to monitor some activities on campus and in the dorms. We urge that CCTVs be placed in key spots, such as gates, rather than all over the campus and inside of buildings, said JUTA general secretary Partha Pratim Roy, according to PTI.
In protest of the occurrence, he said that JUTA will stage a “silent rally” on Wednesday from campus to the Jadavpur police station and present a deputation to the authorities.
He said JUTA will bring out a “silent rally” on Wednesday from the campus to the Jadavpur police station in protest against the incident and submit a deputation to the police.
“We think it is a case of not only ragging but also sexual harassment. We believe the university must have zero tolerance for the offenders,” he added. Two students and a former student have been arrested so far in connection with the death.
