Arvind Kejriwal Alleges Election Manipulation After BJP Mayor’s Resignation, Details

Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and prominent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, has entered the fray amidst the unfolding controversy surrounding the Chandigarh mayoral elections. His remarks come following the resignation of BJP leader Manoj Sonkar from the mayoral post.

Allegations of Election Manipulation

Kejriwal asserted that Sonkar’s resignation serves as evidence of election manipulation. He emphasized concerns over the integrity of the electoral process, stating, “The mayor’s resignation makes it clear that there was manipulation in the election.”

Resignation Preceding Supreme Court Hearing

Sonkar’s resignation comes just ahead of the scheduled Supreme Court hearing on alleged tampering in the mayoral elections. The timing of his resignation has further fueled speculation and debate surrounding the legitimacy of the election results.

Contested Election Results

Manoj Sonkar emerged victorious in the closely contested election held on January 30, defeating AAP candidate Kuldeep Kumar by securing 16 votes against Kumar’s 12. However, the validity of eight votes was disputed, triggering accusations of irregularities from the opposition.

Shifts in Political Dynamics

Adding to the complexity, three AAP councillors – Poonam Devi, Neha, and Gurcharan Kala – defected to the BJP on the same day as Sonkar’s resignation. This defection bolstered the BJP’s strength in the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

Allegations of Electoral Irregularities

Allegations of cheating and electoral irregularities have marred the post-election landscape, with the opposition accusing the BJP of flouting due electoral processes. The controversy deepened with allegations against the presiding officer, Anil Masih, who was purportedly seen tampering with ballot papers in a video submitted to the Supreme Court.

Denial by BJP

The BJP has vehemently refuted these accusations, maintaining their stance on the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.
