Assam News

Assam News: The government of Assam, led by the popular and much-discussed Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has taken a major step by choosing to revoke the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act of 1935. The state government has stated that the registration of Muslim marriages will soon be subject to a new rule. The Assam government claims that this action is meant to guarantee justice for the state’s daughters.

Assam Government’s Major Decision

The Assam government made a major move regarding the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act of 1935 during a recent cabinet meeting. The administration has chosen to repeal this Act and enact a new law for the registration of Muslim weddings, known as the Assam Repeal Bill 2024, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This bill will be presented for consideration in the next session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.

Focus on Ending Child Marriage

The Assam government believes that child marriage is prevalent among 80% of the minority community and 20% of other communities. Although the issue is social rather than religious, the government is committed to eradicating child marriage from the state.

Efforts to End Child Marriage

The Assam government has launched a campaign against child marriage. As part of this initiative, the government has decided to repeal the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act of 1935. Reports indicate that this law allowed marriages of individuals as young as 9 or 10 years old, thus hindering efforts to combat child marriage.

The Assam government claims that child marriage will be entirely eradicated from the state by 2026. To support this goal, the government has also initiated the ‘Child Marriage Prevention Mission,’ for which ₹200 crore was allocated in the last budget.
