Assam News: In the second phase of a statewide crackdown on child marriages in Assam, more than 800 people were arrested on Tuesday, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Numerous drives were done all around the state during the drive’s initial round earlier this year.
“In a massive crackdown on child marriage, Assam Police has arrested over 800 accused people in a special operation, which began in the early hours of dawn,” Sarma said on X.threat As long as the operation was going, he predicted that there will be more arrests in cases involving the threat.
On September 11, Sarma reported to the Assam Assembly that 3,907 persons had been detained in cases involving child marriages over the previous five years, 3,319 of them were charged with crimes under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012).
Previous Drive against child marriage:
Earlier, during a similar drive against child marriage in February 2023, numerous people—including “kazis” and priests—from various regions of the state were detained.
At that time, Chief Minister Sarma made it clear that similar initiatives would take place in the state every six months till the problem of child marriage is eradicated entirely by 2026.
