West Bengal: Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has stated that the government will not permit thugs to take the law into their own hands. On Tuesday, he visited the violence-plagued Hooghly district’s Rishra to assess the situation. In the meantime, police have detained over 50 persons for their claimed involvement in recent stone-pelting incidents in the area.

More than 12 people have reportedly been detained in relation to the case filed at the Rishra Police Station, and more than 40 have been detained in connection with a different case filed at the Srirampur Police Station and the Rishra Police Station. Governor CV Ananda Bose promised to take measures against the offenders and include all law enforcement authorities during his visit to the area plagued by violence. “We won’t ever allow criminals and hooligans to use the law as their own weapon. They will be severely punished by the police. Bengali citizens have a right to live in peace. That right will be protected, he assured.

Train services were paused to guarantee people’s safety
Following a stone-pelting incident at the Rishra railway station in Hooghly district, all local and mail express train services on Eastern Railway’s Howrah-Bardhaman main line were suspended for three hours on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. Train services were paused to guarantee people’s safety, Eastern Railway’s chief public relations officer Kaushik Miron informed ANI. From about 10 p.m. on Monday to 1 a.m. on Tuesday, train service on the route was suspended. Some local and long-distance trains were delayed as a result of this.

Internet services were also shut down
Following the violence, Section 144 was implemented starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday in Serampore, Hooghly district. Following a fight between two groups on Sunday during a Ram Navami parade, prohibition orders were put in place in Rishra. Following the conflicts, internet services were also shut down in the Hooghly area from April 2 to 3.
